Not everyone has spare money to donate to nonprofits, which can make asking for money difficult. People may not want to donate their money to you for a variety of reasons. They may feel that they don’t have the extra funds, or they might not be aware of your organization and how their donations will benefit the community. These situations can make it uncomfortable asking people to support you and your cause. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make asking for money in your content a little easier.
Tell Your Story
Potential donors react to emotion, so tell them a story. If you do this right, you will be able to engage them and educate them at the same time. Make sure that you are being real and let them know how you’re changing lives and who you have helped specifically. This will remind your potential donors of all the people who are in need all around them.
Ask For A Gift
Asking for money can be awkward, but if you are running a nonprofit (especially when you’re just starting one) it’s a must. This needs to happen in the content of both your website and your flyers/brochures/informational booklets. Also, try sending out postcards a few times a year, especially around the holidays, asking for gifts. Make sure that you explain to donors what their gift can do for someone in need, no matter the monetary value. Tell them what $5 can do and what $50 can do.
Thank Them
Whether they have donated or not, thank them for their time. If they have donated to your cause, be sure to send a hand-written note to them within two days of the donation. This will build trust and relationships, which means that they are more likely to donate again.
Most of all, remember to build relationships with people and be passionate about your cause, no matter what it is!
