5 Steps to Building a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign

Avatar of Pulse Marketing By Pulse Marketing

There are many ways to ask for money to support your nonprofit organization, some more successful than others. One of the ways you may not have spent much thought on is a crowdfunding campaign. Don’t think this avenue is right for you and your nonprofit? Think again!

Crowdfunding is a way to raise money for your cause or organization without going out and finding investors or using all of your own money. It’s pretty simple really, you decide how much money you need, make a short video explaining why, and people can donate as much or as little as they would like. Every bit counts and anyone can do it!

A crowdfunding campaign may not be the cure-all for your fundraising woes, but it can be a big help!

Similar to raising money in any other way, you need to know how to do it. Nothing is truly free, there is always at least a bit of work involved when fundraising.

Step 1: Research!

Go look around different crowdfunding sites, see what people are fundraising for, take notes on campaigns that are doing well (and ones that are not) so you are better informed as to what people will respond to.

Step 2: Define your goals and costs!

What exactly are you looking to get out of this campaign? How much money are you looking to raise? Your goals can be both to raise awareness for your cause and to raise money for your organization. Exposure and name recognition can sometimes be as beneficial to your goals as monetary donations.

Step 3: Prepare your pitch and market your little heart out!

Some sites ask for videos and some just ask for pictures. Either way, keep it short and sweet! Tell people who you are, why you’re doing this, and what they will be supporting. Once you’ve done this, share it EVERYWHERE! You want everyone you know and everyone you don’t know to see this and if they don’t donate, at least they’ll see it and tell their friends who may donate about it.

Step 4: Be patient!

It’s natural that there will be times that you won’t receive as many donations, just roll with it, update your page, and keep marketing your campaign.

Step 5: Be creative and have fun!

Sometimes offering prizes and incentives is the best way to get donations. People will do just about anything for a free t-shirt. Roll with the punches, take advice from your donors, and keep your head up.
